Brittany offers everything you are looking for, forests, heaths, gushing white water, enchanted fountains, and cool peaceful rivers complimenting lush green scenery and there are also headlands, bays, rocks, shores, reefs, surf, caves, glorious beaches and beautiful tranquil islands.
Its all here.
The Nantes-Brest canal

The Nantes-Brest canal runs through the middle of the Morbihan and it is a wonderful leisure facility. Whether you opt for a walk, a boat trip or enjoy a quiet afternoons fishing, its just perfect. Cyclists rate its towpath highly, infinitely superior to most canal towpaths in Britain.
Napoléan ordered it built , because Brittany’s roads were barely passable.
The result is 600 kms of waterway, reaching up to 555 mts above sea level and includes 325 locks. It took 38 years to build and construction was still in progress when Napoléan died in 1821.
The Voie Verte
Translated means the ‘ Green Lane’. It was fully operational on 29th June 2002 and it used to be an old disused railway line. Today it is an excellent smooth tarmac lane, covering 53 kms from Questembert to Mauron, meandering through some beautiful countryside and moors and for the most part the lane runs close to the canal.
The lane is used mainly by horse riders, walkers and cyclists ( no motorized vehicles allowed) and when you are in need of a pit stop, to rest those weary limbs, there are benches and in some places even tables, usually situated near the bridges. How very thoughtful!
You can join the Voie Verte at Le Roc St Andre only 2.5 miles away and walk to yours hearts content.

The Brocéliande Forest

Officially, it is called the Forêt de Paimpont after the attractive grey-stoned village that forms its centre, but everyone calls it the Forêt de Brocèliande.
This area of outstanding beauty covers an area of 18,000 acres, the hilly tract of woodland in the heart of Morbihan that still evokes images of King Arthur and his Knights.
6000 years ago, man erected monuments here whose mystery still fascinates today, intriguing both walkers and researchers.
Wander just a little way into the quiet of this ancient woodland and you start to sense the magic of its atmosphere.
This is the stuff of legend, ruined mills stud the countryside, Vivienne’s house can be found here, the sorceress who enchanted Merlin the Magician, look for his burial tomb, the Giant’s Tomb and a prehistoric burial site, and you might even find the Spring of Eternal youth, but only if you are pure of heart……..
Almost everything here is enchanted, or so it would seem, look out for the grey tiled roof at the foot of a gully on the D312 northeast of Campénéac, where you will find St John’s Well- its water is highly sought after, car loads of locals arrive with bottles and containers to fill from the well, but not a word was uttered about its magical properties .
The forest today is in fact the last remaining vestige of the dense woodlands that covered most of Brittany at the time of the Romans. Stag, deer and wild boar are still hunted here.
So what are you waiting for. Come and discover this beautiful region of France, you won’t be disappointed, we promise.
